Dr. Seuss Day

Created by: María Eugenia Román. Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2nd, 1904 in Springfield, Massachusetts. His grandparents were born in Germany and migrated to The United States in the 1860’s. He read a lot as a child, loving books that had a creative use of language and humor. He also enjoyed drawing, even as a young boy, and his parents encouraged his artistic expression.

Some of his most beloved books include: The Cat in the Hat, Green Eggs and Ham, Horton Hears a Who and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He published over 40 children’s books and helped produce a number of film and TV programs. Dr. Seuss’ honors include two Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards, a Peabody Award, and the Pulitzer Prize. Dr. Seuss passed away at the age of 87 on September 24, 1991.

This year, Dr. Seuss Enterprises reviewed their book catalog and decided to stop publishing some books that portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong. Let us remember that Dr. Seuss lived in times different from ours, where the vision of inclusion was not as wide as it is today, and we appreciate that the company’s mission is to support all communities and families.

Our English Department celebrates Dr. Seuss’ Day every year on March 2^nd. Students read and become familiar with Dr. Seuss’ books and illustrations. They join the celebration wearing creative costumes inspired by their favorite characters. We aim to foster the love of reading…all in a fun way!
